Large and in charge, Krokus is a fierce protector of his hen friends.

Krokus came to Heartland from another shelter near Milwaukee. He was surrendered by a first-time chicken owner as a "hatchery mistake" - meaning he was purchased as a chick and mistaken for a female hen. People who purchase chicks for backyard chicken keeping often do not want roosters or are unable to keep them because roosters are illegal in many cities/towns. Unfortunately, situations like this happen all the time - so often in fact that we have a term for them - "oops roosters".
