Meet Carolyn, our first Volunteer of the Month in 2020! Carolyn is one of our amazing maintenance volunteers, and while it might not seem like a very glamorous gig Рour maintenance volunteers are so important in keeping our rescued residents safe and warm. During her weekly shifts, Carolyn makes sure our bird residents are safe by doing predator proofing around the sanctuary, and she also covered all of the barn windows in plastic before the winter weather arrived (one huge job!). Carolyn is always punctual and willing to do whatever maintenance projects are needed each week! We love seeing her smiling face at the barn every Sunday. Thank you for everything you do for Heartland, Carolyn!

1. What do you do in your time outside of Heartland? When I’m not at Heartland Farm Sanctuary I’m usually working or relaxing. If the weather cooperates I like to snowboard, but I’m pretty good at relaxing so I was looking for an activity and found Heartland.

2. How did you find out about Heartland? What got you interested? I found out about Heartland by searching for farm related activities, found Heartland in my neighborhood. I was pretty sure this was going to be an interesting place with all the different types of animals, so I applied.

3. What is your favorite part about volunteering for HFS? My favorite part about Heartland is being able to help out while being around the animals. While I was predator proofing stalls, one of the ducks waddled in to check out what I was doing. Inspected the hole that was dug to build up the wall and when the duck’s curiosity was satisfied waddled back out. A goose though, make a much better defender.

4. What do you wish other people knew about Heartland? It doesn’t take long to see all the hard work that goes into creating such a cool place that Heartland Farm Sanctuary is. A very unique place that I’m glad I have found.

5. If you could adopt only one HFS animal, who would you pick and why? If I could adopt one of the farm animals It would be Brenner the duck. I like that relaxed waddle and curiosity that duck has!
