Meet Kenda, our AMAZING Volunteer of the Month! Kenda is a long-time volunteer who loves volunteering on the Saturday morning animal care shift (and honestly – should have been Volunteer of the Month long ago)! Kenda is incredibly reliable, friendly, and has the best sense of humor. She also has helped out with special events at the sanctuary, and is even a Stable Supporter for Heartland! She is always willing to lend a hand wherever it’s needed. Kenda – You are incredible! Thank you for sticking with us for the past several years – volunteers like you are like GOLD! (Winnie thinks so, too.)

1. What do you do in your time outside of Heartland? I spend most of my time hanging out with my husband and our dog. We recently adopted two kittens, so I have been busy learning about cats and laughing at their antics. I also love reading, baking and taking my dog on long hikes.

2. How did you find out about Heartland? What got you interested? My good friend, Alecia, volunteered (and then started working!) for Heartland. She would tell me stories about the animals and I could see how passionate and excited she was about it. I came out to visit one day and just fell in love with all the animals and decided I needed to sign up to spend more time with all of them.

3. Can you describe a favorite/memorable moment or event at HFS? On my very first shift, Lily ventured out of her stall (only a few steps) for the first time since she had been at Heartland. At the time I had no idea how huge this was! It was so heartwarming to see her bravely making those steps, and to see how genuinely excited all the volunteers were. Everyone was so proud of her!

4. What is your favorite part about volunteering for HFS? I love giving out belly rubs and butt scratches! Recently I was out in the pasture scratching Bert, and when I turned around there was Teddy, Sherman, and Blossom, standing in line waiting for their turn.

5. What do you wish other people knew about Heartland? I think most people think of Heartland as a place where people take care of the animals, which obviously is true. However, they really take care of us too. I can’t describe the wonderful feeling I get from watching these animals, seeing their different personalities shine, and knowing that I’m helping to give them a safe, forever home.

6. If you could adopt only one HFS animal, who would you pick and why? Such a hard question! If I could only pick one, it would be Frances. He has such a calm, wise old man vibe, and such a sweet face.
