Say hello to Sara, our amazing February Volunteer of the Month! Sara rocks it out on the Friday morning shift, mastering the produce prep for all of our hungry animals! Sara is incredibly reliable, efficient and self-directed – give her a task and BOOM – she’s got it! She is also incredibly thorough – Sara always makes sure the food bins are closed up, the fridges are organized, the kitchen is clean and the trash is emptied! And the best part? She’s incredibly patient and flexible – which you have to be if you’re in the salad-makin’ game – because there’s always a sheep, goat or pig busting into the kitchen, asking for extra snacks!

1. What do you do in your time outside of Heartland? I enjoy spending time with my family, being outdoors and traveling. I’m working on learning German right now, hoping to make a trip to Germany in the next few years.

2. How did you find out about Heartland? What got you interested? I found out about Heartland while searching for volunteer opportunities for my daughters to complete their school service hours. I found Heartland’s website and thought, I would enjoy volunteering there!

3. Can you describe a favorite/memorable moment or event at HFS? I don’t have any one specific thing. I guess I would say when a new rescued animal comes to Heartland, just watching how they thrive in their new, loving environment.

4. What is your favorite part about volunteering for HFS? Being around all the different animals. Something I wouldn’t get to experience without volunteering at Heartland.

5. What do you wish other people knew about Heartland? I sometimes run into people who haven’t heard of Heartland. I want them to know what a caring group of staff and volunteers they have. How hard they work to give the rescued animals a comfortable and happy life.

6. If you could adopt only one HFS animal, who would you pick and why? I think it would be Flower. She is often hanging around outside the food prep area while I’m preparing morning meals. She is sweet and a little mischievous.
