Say hello to Vickie, Heartland’s December Volunteer of the Month! Where do we begin? Vickie volunteers on animal care shifts on Friday and Sunday mornings, and she always arrives early and stays late to make sure everything gets accomplished. Vickie always has a good attitude — no matter what job she has and no matter the weather! When it’s cold and pouring rain, you’ll find Vickie out in the pasture making sure all the animals have enough water and are comfortable – and of course she does it all with a smile! Vickie also excels at training new volunteers, letting them shadow her and she’s great at answering questions. Vickie’s a good communicator and is friendly, approachable and easy to talk to – the perfect combination when working with people and animals! Thank you, Vickie, for being a dedicated part of the Heartland family!

1. What do you do in your time outside of Heartland? Outside of HFS, I’m a caregiver for a 97-year-old lady! I also work two nights a week at Lussier Community Center. I sing in a chorus and I love to read and care for my Granddogs – Finn and Amar.

2. How did you find out about Heartland? What got you interested? I’m retired from the Madison Metropolitan School District as a Special Education Assistant. I mentioned I’d love to work and spend time around animals after retirement to a coworker (and lovely HFS person!) She knew just the place. Thanks, Stephanie!

3. Can you describe a favorite/memorable moment or event at HFS? Well, I can say once, in two years, Gracie the goose let me pet her! That was special. Also, the first time I visited the emus (alone) and was about to leave and open the gate, one of them loomed over my shoulder, as if to say, “Let me get that gate for you.” Cool!

4. What is your favorite part about volunteering for HFS? There isn’t anything I don’t love about HFS. It is the best work there, caring for all these animals at their safe, loving forever home.

5. What do you wish other people knew about Heartland? HFS’s vision is so true. These animals, many who have suffered what no animal should, can still have trust, love and enjoy life along with the best volunteers who love them all!

6. If you could adopt only one HFS animal, who would you pick and why? Gosh, I love Mister! His attitude is unsurpassed and his verve for life is awesome. The feeling is not quite mutual – yet. There’s still time! I’m very patient. Also jealous of Bob! (Heartland’s project coordinator, who has a special bond with Mister Goose.)
