Meet Kate, our November Volunteer of the Month! Kate is a fierce member of the Wednesday morning animal care shift. She’s reliable, always on time, and comes with a smile on her face, ready to work every week! She is able to do any chore -whether mucking stalls and the cow shed, moving birds around, helping hold animals that need medical attention – Kate is very efficient and takes initiative. We love that, and we feel so lucky that she’s part of our family!

1. What do you do in your time outside of Heartland? I recently rescued a puppy with some anxiety issues so I’ve been a busy new dog mom. Day to day, I spend a lot of time reading, hanging out with friends, and playing sports (soccer, frisbee, volleyball, softball).

2. How did you find out about Heartland? What got you interested? I found out about Heartland through an old co-worker. I’ve always loved animal rescue and farm life so Heartland was the perfect mix of both after I left my job and wanted to spend more of my days outside.

3. Can you describe a favorite/memorable moment or event at HFS? My favorite moment happened when I was filling up the cow trough. Beau came over to see what I was doing and started to drink out of the hose and splash around. Seeing a cow so happy from playing like a kid in a sprinkler made my whole day.

4. What is your favorite part about volunteering for HFS? Having goat, mini pig, and chicken “helpers” when I’m mucking. They’re all super curious and love to check things out (and maybe get some scritches!).

5. What do you wish other people knew about Heartland? How passionate the staff and volunteers are about animal rescue and the care the animals receive. These animals are so loved.

6. If you could adopt only one HFS animal, who would you pick and why? Saving the hardest question for last…I would have to pick Mick. He has the sweetest llama face and such a cute shy personality.
