Meet Matt, our October Volunteer of the Month! Matt is extremely helpful around the barn! In addition to doing a great job with regular animal care chores, he is always willing to do whatever is needed, from training a new volunteer to unloading hay! He is good at heavy lifting jobs, and also very kind and patient with all of the animals. He has a quiet, calm energy and the animals (and people!) love him. Thanks for all you do for us, Matt!

1. What do you do in your time outside of Heartland? I like to go hiking with my wife and our dog and just spending time with friends and their kids. I’m also trying my hand at woodworking, although I’ve only made a handful of things so far.

2. How did you find out about Heartland? What got you interested? I think I saw a video online about an animal sanctuary and was curious if there were any in our area. Once I found Heartland I looked into volunteering and how I could help out.

3. Can you describe a favorite/memorable moment or event at HFS? When Harvey and Wilbur were younger they would always be so excited to get out of their stall. They would scurry by looking for scraps or treats they could find and then a few minutes later run by going the other way… and then back again. It was like watching a Scooby Doo cartoon.

4. What is your favorite part about volunteering for HFS? Getting to interact with all of the different animals and seeing how different their personalities are.

5. What do you wish other people knew about Heartland? I wish more people were aware of how many animals in the world have similar stories to those at Heartland and how making changes in their own lifestyles could help avoid putting animals in those situations.

6. If you could adopt only one HFS animal, who would you pick and why? It’s a tie between Olive and Maybelle. Olive because he’s the coolest duck in town. And Maybelle because she’s the sweetest pig and she just looks so happy lying in the sun all day.
