Meet Mary Jo, our April Volunteer of the Month! Mary Jo volunteers in the Heartland office every week, doing everything from data entry and filing to research, running errands, stuffing envelopes and more! She also helps with setting up events and managing Heartland merchandise. She is always willing to lend a hand wherever it’s needed – which makes her such a fantastic volunteer! She is also a huge animal lover and is one of the sweetest, most authentic people you’ll ever meet! Mary Jo, we love having you as part of the Heartland family!

1. What do you do in your time outside of Heartland? I recently retired from the Madison School District where I worked in special education. I’m still adjusting to retirement, but I am enjoying having more time to read and the ability to take lots of walks. I love to take pictures and plan to do some traveling. Soon I will be gardening; both flowers and vegetables.

2. How did you find out about Heartland? What got you interested? Heartland is just down the road from where I live. I’ve always been an animal lover, and after seeing the amazing difference Heartland was making in the lives of animals and people, I just really wanted to help in any way I could.

3. Can you describe a favorite/memorable moment or event at HFS? Working in the office, I don’t get to interact much with the animals. But, when we were still working out of the old trailer, we often had chickens and cats in there with us. I remember once when I was stuffing envelopes, suddenly out of the blue, Sarah, the hen, flew down from the stack of boxes she was perched on and landed on my shoulder. It was surprising, but wonderful, too!

4. What is your favorite part about volunteering for HFS? I love the people who work and volunteer at Heartland. Everyone is so kind and considerate. It’s nice to be around that. I love being a part of an organization that loves animals so much.

5.What do you wish other people knew about Heartland? I wish people could see how hard everyone at Heartland works and how they will do anything in their power to make the lives of animals happier and healthier. Heartland gives these beautiful animals a safe and loving home, and then they give people, both kids and adults, the opportunity to interact with them. This exposure to animals makes the world a more compassionate place.

6. If you could adopt only one HFS animal, who would you pick and why? I would have to pick Winnie. I’ve always been fond on pigs, and Winnie was my first close-up encounter at Heartland. During a tour of the barn, I got a chance to kiss her on her sweet pink head, and she smelled so good!

Wow! That sounds like heaven. I love the foto of you and the goat– what is the goat’s name? (No offense to you, I hope) WE are building a new house and will have some land, so I hope to have a few goats, chickens, ducks, and a donkey or two. Thanks for the work you do and for being an inspiration to me!
