Meet Matt Vullings, our December Volunteer of the Month! Matt helps out on the Monday morning animal care shift but does many extra projects around the farm. He built our manure pile ramp (sounds glamorous, but it’s a lifesaver!) and, most recently, he installed a new gate to the goat/sheep pasture which is amazing (seriously – when you work in a barn, new gates are life-changing!) We love Matt for his kind and fun personality and his energy! Thanks for all you do, Matt!

1. What do you do in your time outside of Heartland? I am semi retired but still buy and sell artifacts and MCM furniture. I play guitar daily. I have a regular fitness schedule. Lots of dog park time. I raise chickens and bees. Just bought land to put my barn on! Then I will have a hobby farm.

2. How did you find out about Heartland? What got you interested? I live pretty close and drove by the barn on several occasions thinking how cool it would be to have a barn like that. I saw the sign and googled it! Then volunteered.

3. Can you describe a favorite/memorable moment or event at HFS? My favorite event was finishing the gate! (laughs)

4. What is your favorite part about volunteering for HFS? My favorite part is playing with the pigs.

5. What do you wish other people knew about Heartland? I wish people knew how much of a need there is for homes for animals and how many people don’t realize it takes a lot of work to keep animals.

6. If you could adopt only one HFS animal, who would you pick and why? Harvey for sure … I love his attitude!
