Say hello to David, our August Volunteer of the Month! David started volunteering on animal care shifts at the beginning of this year but his commitment to and love of Heartland makes it seem like he’s been at HFS much longer! In addition to his two animal care shifts per week, David helps our Shelter Director with inventory, coordinates volunteers to pick up supplies and is always willing to do extra jobs (the work at the farm never ends!) His positive attitude and fantastic work ethic make him one heck of a volunteer! Thank you so much for everything you do for us, David!

1. What do you do in your time outside of Heartland? Potter working on figurative high relief terracotta sculpture. Trail running and swimming after 25 years of triathlon competition. Kayaking and hiking in the U.P. Traveling with my husband and working in my yard with my 14 yr. dachshund.

2. How did you find out about Heartland? What got you interested? I found out about Heartland when I was a sponsor at the Dane County Humane Society, and began exploring other animal welfare organizations in the area.

3. Can you describe a favorite/memorable moment or event at HFS? A favorite memory of mine is Baine being given a salad when he was still in his newly elevated hammock bed. Obviously overjoyed at his newly delivered prize, he began swinging his head so vigorous, that his bed became a swing as his mouth just grazing the top of the salad to get a bite in between triumphant tosses of his head in the air. He really gave it his all and we loved him for it.

4. What is your favorite part about volunteering for HFS? My favorite part is learning more about the animals, their needs, how best to help them, and in doing so, discover their personalities. All of this along side insightful, dedicated, problem solving staff and volunteers is truly inspiring.

5. What do you wish other people knew about Heartland? I wish people knew how very sensitive and smart the animals are, and how well they respond to kindness and conditioning.

6. If you could adopt only one HFS animal, who would you pick and why? OK so this is a hard one because of the recent loss of both my buddies Baine and Frosty, so I’m bending the rules and leaving with the notorious bad boys Moo and Rowdy.
